These guys need to get jobs |
Of course, a crazy lady who obsesses over food costs would be a crazy cat lady, right? I haven't always been a crazy cat lady, I used to just love dogs. I still do, but at this time in my life, dogs = complicated. My kitties provide just as much love and affection as my dearly beloved cocker spaniel Chloe that I got when I was 15 and just died a few months ago with my mom by her side. She lived a very long life. That aside, cats are incredibly easy (especially when you have this litter box). Also, cats are really shy and aloof with strangers, so if you've never had a cat that was your own, you might just not understand.
Butler, our tuxedo cat, is dressed for the profession. Unfortunately he doesn't serve me, I serve him. So it goes when your butler can't stand on two feet and doesn't have opposable thumbs.
Boo, our all black cat who has a little white spot (like the cream filling in a hostess cupcake) was given this name because he's a Halloween cat with snaggle tooth fangs. He loves food and is the most vocal of the two. He also wakes me up almost every morning around 3 am, the witching hour. He is a terror, need I say more?
We split between two bowls a 6 oz scoop of Roasted Chicken flavored Nutro MAX CAT Indoor Adult Cat Food. A 16lb bag goes for $24.99 at Petsmart (Petco and Petsmart both don't allow discounted shipping on pet food, it is a bummer to miss out on their web sales because of shipping costs). We also let them split a 3 oz can of Fancy Feast, they are particularly fond of the marinated morsels, 24 packs are $13.29 each. That means that daily, the dry food costs $0.24 and the wet food costs $0.55, for a total of $0.87 a day with 9.75% Chicago sales tax added.
Let's just say that when we got these guys they were too skinny and had terrible skin and fur. And now they are silky shiny and fluffy, with just the right amount of plump. I think it's worth it to not buy the cheapest stuff available.
Umm...I'm not ready to figure out the cost of litter. Maybe later if I build up some courage.
LAST MINUTE UPDATE: Amazon is testing a new program called Subscribe and Save. I found out that if I subscribe to have a 24 pack box shipped to me for free every month, I get 15% off, or about $2 off per box. This saves us 8 cents a day, or $29 a year. And I don't have to worry about running out.
that's great! our three are all on a specialized diet of no fish/chicken/grain. they built up some allergies to chicken and fish. they're eating EVO and Nature's Instinct (lamb, veal, duck, & rabbit) and are currently eating about $3.50-5.50 a day depending on how much they eat!
ReplyDeletewe've moved on to "taste of the wild" which is a no grain, no by-product cat food. it's 9.95 for a 5lb bag but it seems to go a long way when we throw in one large taste of the wild wet canned food a day. can't skimp on the kitties! vet bills are bound to be way more expensive than the lobster consomme that they enjoyed this morning. you read that right: lobster consomme. jen
